    • The key to making homemade potato soup mix is using all dry ingredients, so nothing spoils. A variety of recipes exist for potato soup mix, but this particular version is from AllRecipes.com. You will need one and three-fourths cups of instant mashed potato mix, one and one-half cups of dry milk powder and two tablespoons of chicken bouillon granules. You will also need the following dried seasonings: two teaspoons of minced onion, one teaspoon of parsley, one-fourth teaspoon of white pepper, one-fourth teaspoon of thyme, one-eighth teaspoon of ground turmeric and one and one-half teaspoons of seasoning salt. Simply combine the ingredients by stirring them together, or if you are giving the mix as a gift, use a clear jar and layer the ingredients so that the pretty colors show through.

    • If you are giving your potato soup mix as a gift, presentation is key. Play with different types of containers for your soup. You could use a soup bowl, a mason jar, a coffee mug or a seasonable jar or glass. After you pour the potato soup mix into the container, cut out a large square of cellophane and place it in the center. Fold the cellophane upward so it covers the mug, jar or bowl and gather the cellophane into a bunch, tying it together with a colored ribbon. Attach preparation instructions for the soup, since some of your recipients might not know the first thing about making potato soup. On a small card or piece of paper, write or print the ingredients used, in case he or she wants to make a double recipe or make the recipe again. Then write the steps of the cooking process, the cooking time and serving suggestions. Punch a hole in the corner of the card and feed the ribbon through the hole of the card, tying it securely. Write on the card, "When ready to serve, measure one-half of a cup of soup mix into a bowl. Pour one cup of boiling water over the mix, stirring until smooth."

    • You can make changes to the soup mix, subbing in your own ingredients and spices to suit your taste. If you don't like tumeric, use ground mustard. Add a touch of garlic salt or powder or onion powder for another flavor variation. If you are using the potato mix as a gift, add a layer of bacon bits to the jar, or a layer of dried scallions or parsley. Instead of giving this as a gift, package it into individual plastic bags and send it with your kids for lunch for take it to work for an easy meal. If you can't eat milk products, use powdered soy milk in place of the dry milk products for the same taste.
